Additional Details

Joseph R. Andrews (1778-1849) spent most of his life as a physician in Monroe, NY. The Chronicles of Monroe in the Olden Time recalls: "The doctor was quite tall, and when we knew him was erect in bearing, benevolent in countenance, with abundance of long, silvery hair. He visited his patients on horseback, with his medicines in a saddle-bag, a true physician of the old school" (page 128). His extensive work for the Town of Monroe, presumably for the care for the indigent, is listed on pages 179, 267, 418, and 509. An 1830 receipt addressed to Andrews, found within the ledger, is tipped to the verso of the first page.
